The western border in the 1980s does not exactly evoke many dramatic events. Those are in our history rather associated with the early 1950s when there were numerous attempts to cross the western border strictly guarded by heavily armed soldiers.

Our story takes place between 1981 and 1982 when a young man is called up to military service to serve in the Border Guard. His romantic ideals that running away abroad would be easy now soon clash with the stern reality. Boy turns into man.

As an analogy serves the story of a little boy running away to West germany from a children’s home. The young man and the boy are faced with reality they both will not like.

„I once found myself in a very similar situation“, recalls the film director Miloš Pilař.„In 1981 I commenced military service as a member of the Border Guard units. The stories in our movie did actually happen and are all based on a true story. It was only long after my time in the military ended when I realized that this historical period needs to be captured and depicted on the screen.“

Things are changing and people are gradually forgetting about the communistic past of their country. Today’s young generation finds it hard to understand that people used to be put in prison for many years for illegal crossing of the border.

These days, it seems almost impossible that it used to be the only way how to leave the country and go abroad...
