NY Ålesund 2008
In year 2008 it was just 80 years from the start of legendary polar expedition to the North Pole by an airship called ITALIA. The airship crew was commanded by Umberto Nobile and part in it took a Czech physicist František Běhounek . After a tragic fall of the airship on an arctic ice, Běhounek together with other 8 members of the crew survived. Thanks to his devotion and discipline he contributed to a successful rescue of all airship-wrecked people. This story is known nearly all over the world.
In March 2008 an international expedition took place at Norwegian Spitsbergen led by Czech polar explorer Václav Sůra with the aim to honour the memory of František Běhounek.
The expedition members set off a 215 km long journey from Ny Alesund in Kingsbay. From the same place, where in May 1928 was the starting place of the legendary airship Italia. There Václav Sůra honoured the memory of Czech physicist and traveller František Běhounek by handing over a memorial tablet to the assistant of governor.
A five-man expedition with Australian and New Zealand participants had to overcome three frozen fjords, inland ice mountains with the highest peak of Spitsbergen Newtontoppen 1717 m high and finished their journey at Longyerbean.
A film document directed by Miloslav Doležal called “Ny Alesund 2008 – in honour of František Běhounek” follows the expedition and dramatic events from the year 1928.
The DVD "Ny Alesund 2008 – in honour of František Běhounek" contains also a BONUS – a documentary film „Arctic adventure“ from the cycle Czech Television EGO about Václav Sůra journey across Spitsbergen in 1997.
